85 Year 'Young' Robert Hanley Travels from New York to Watch Son Bill Play

By Steve LaMontia, Director of Communications

Bill Hanley is a player for the Dallas Rangers in the 55-over Cactus division. More importantly, his father Robert traveled all the way from Rochester, New York to watch his son play.  Robert is an 85 year ‘young’ retired marine who served in the Korean War and is the recipient of the Purple Heart for his efforts. He and his wife, and Bill’s mother, Eleanor are enjoying a week in the beautiful Arizona sun to watch the kid play some ball.  Robert was also honored before the game by throwing out the first pitch with children Robin and Bill in attendance along with Bill’s wife Sharon and MSBL Founder and President Steve Sigler.

"My father was always there watching me play through high school and my college career so him being here means a great deal to me and my family,” said son Bill. "This is really special.”

"My wife and I happily sacrificed a lot making sure Bill could play ball, back when he was seven or eight even, and to be able to keep watching him now is really something,” explained the senior Mr. Hanley.  "He was really a great baseball player in high school and then his college coaches made him even better and it was really special to watch him then and to still be able to watch him now. We are so honored to be able to travel here from Rochester to watch Bill and his Dallas Rangers play and hopefully we can watch them win this afternoon.”

Of course the logistics from New York to Texas make it a little difficult to watch Bill lace them up very often.  "We have seen Bill play two or three times since he began his MSBL career but it is so hard to get to Texas very often.  But we are so gratified that MSBL has helped make this special and something we will never forget.”

As of this writing the Rangers were struggling a bit but are still in it and may catch fire for a fast and furious playoff run.  Mr. and Mrs. Hanley, along with daughter Robin and Bill’s wife Sharon, will be at every game root, root, rooting for the home team and you can’t help but pull for these guys.  A picture of Robert and Bill holding the championship trophy would be the cherry on top of a wonderful baseball relationship.

"I cherish baseball and I know how much my son loves the game.  He’s an older dude but I love that he’s still playing!”
