Greg Schienda Receives 2015 MSBL Hall of Fame Award

By Steve LaMontia, Director of Communications

Greg Schienda is the president of the Connecticut North MSBL and is a 62 year old retired engineer for the world famous Otis Elevator Company.  We have seen all of Greg’s work in action many times throughout our lives as we experience the ‘ups and downs’ of our days. All kidding aside, Greg has been a part of the CNMSBL since 1990 and is also an MSBL World Series and Las Vegas veteran and knows his way around a diamond, both as a player and as an organizer. "Back in 1990 we had about 60 guys playing and now we have around 255 or so,” said Schienda.  "We are proud of the fact we have recently expanded to a 25 and over and a 35 and over divisions.  We have eight teams in each and it is working great.”

Steve Sigler, Founder and President of MSBL, has certainly taken notice of Greg’s hard work and dedication and has honored him with induction into the 2015 class of the MSBL Hall of Fame.  Greg was a new president of the league in 2014 but by no means someone who has looked in from the outside without interest over all of these years.  "I always went to the meetings as a manager and have served as a sort of league consultant,” explained Schienda.  "We established a board to distribute the work it takes to run a league and I have always been involved in the process of helping to run things.  We do it together and nobody dictates.  Becoming president isn’t a huge step because we have always done things together.”

Greg’s girlfriend Shirley keeps him busy off the field and makes sure he stays in good enough shape to keep playing for his current league team, the 35 and over Newington Caps.  "Shirley keeps me moving.  We’re always biking or hiking and then when snow flies we hit the slopes.  I don’t have an off-season,” laughed Schienda.

Greg is a previous infielder and outfielder but has found a new home at first base since having a knee replacement.  He has managed and played for MSBL World Series teams like the Connecticut Navigators and Jorels, who are both always tough.  He has also played in the Las Vegas MSBL tournament with the Paladins.  "I usually could only get away for one week and sometimes for two weeks but this year I plan on playing in all three,” said Schienda.  "I don’t have any rings yet but I have made a ton of friends over the years and we love playing together.  That’s what it’s all about.”

Greg is the only member of the original 1990 league that still laces ‘em up. Now the league is an all wood bat league and has expanded to a best of three championship format at season’s end. People just aren’t interested in playing past Labor Day.  "We went to two age divisions for the regular season and then expanded our playoff format and I think everyone is happy with that,” Schienda explained.  "We don’t have an all-star game because there are not any open weekends during the summer.  We’re all about quality and making it the best experience we can.”

"This award means a great deal to me because I am being recognized for all of the work done throughout the year, and it does take work all year long, as any president will tell you,” said Schienda.  "Our season is the spring training for the MSBL World Series, which is the ultimate baseball experience for the year.  Guys can act like they are in high school or college and everything is so well run and umpired in Arizona that it really makes that special.  Thank you to MSBL for that experience and to Steve Sigler for recognizing my contribution."
