Mid-Atlantic Labor Day Classic Crowns Diamond Dream Mustangs 45+ Champs

Submitted by Mike La Comb, Diamond Dream Mustangs manager

Thanks to an all-around tremendous team effort, and a never say die attitude, the Mustangs went undefeated and won the Chesapeake MSBL Mid Atlantic Classic. It was one of the most exciting tournaments ever.  We came from behind in all four wins while three games were decided by one run, with two of our wins coming as walk offs. At any game or inning in the tournament, you never knew who was going to get the big hit, or throw the perfect pitch, or make that ESPN defensive play, or steal that base that made the difference.

We could start naming players that had great a great tourney, or contributed so much to our victory, but the list would have to include everyone. That's how well we played together. No individual MVPs, just a team MVP! I want to send out a special recognition to Jim Konstantakis for his coaching help throughout the weekend. Here are the batting OBP stats and recognition for our pitchers.

Game 1...Bob Englemeyer from the Chesapeake MSBL league pitched us well into the game against our tournament rival NJ Rangers. Terry Lonjin came on to close it out with the win, as we came back late with a walk off win.

Game 2...Harrison Toy, one of DCMSBL's top pitchers, got a hard earned win against last year's tournament champions, the Northhampton Knights. Terry Lonjin once again came in for the save.

Semi final...One of our newest Mustang additions, Floyd Mohler, pitched late enough in the game to keep it tight, as he had to fight hard to overcome a few defensive lapses on our part. Chris Dunn came in to keep it where it was until we got up enough steam to come from behind with another walk off win.

Championship Game...Steve Lounello, heading up the Albany MSBL contingent of Mustangs, aced up and pitched a strong six to get the win, with Terry Lonjin once again getting the save.

OBP top ten batting stat leaders: ( Even those not in the top ten all had a great offensive tournament by getting key hits and game winning hits all weekend long. Four batters were tied with .333 OBP for the weekend just behind the cut off of the top ten listed below).

1. RON BARCKHOFF 10/12   .833

2. DUB DANIELS 9/12    .750

3. TERRY LONJIN 8/12   .667

4. STEVE LOUNELLO 5/8  .625

5. JEFF PARKS 7/12   .583

6. DANNY CRAIG 5/10   .500

7. MARK GLEASON 4/8  .500

8. JAMES HUTMACHER 5/11  .455

9. ALEX BRUNET 5/12  .417

10. CHRIS DUNN  2/5   .400
