  • MSBL League of the Month: North Texas Amateur Baseball League (Dallas)

By Steve LaMontia, Director of Communications

Kirk Pruitt is the league president of the North Texas Amateur Baseball League (NTABL), located in and around Dallas, Texas. They started in 1988 with only four teams and now suit up 48-50 teams, including the 12 to 14 teams that play fall ball.  Five years ago long time president Gerry Mecca stepped down and hand- picked Kirk as his successor.

For their tremendous success and dedication, the North Texas Amateur Baseball League has been picked by MSBL Founder and President Steve Sigler as the MSBL ‘League of the Month’ for July.  Congratulations!

"2017 is my fifth year as President, I do NOT do it alone,” stated Pruitt.  "In Dallas we have a team of volunteers that keeps this machine running.”  Kirk wanted to make sure we recognize his selfless helpers.  Here are a few: Open National VP Jason Bottenfield, Open American VP and All Star Game Chairman Mark Adams, Veterans Division VP and Rookie League Coordinator Bill Macey, Masters Division VP Bobby Caltabiano, Social Media Director and Schedule Master Shawn Lee, Treasurer Gerry Mecca, Director of Fields and Umpires Sam Kayea, Legacy Division VP Anthony Cass and Rookie League Volunteers – Gary Menees, James "JR” Roberts, Paul Adams, Chris Huggins and John "JT” Crossley

Gerry Mecca served as President from 2010 to 2012 and Sam Kayea preceded him.  Both of them are still involved.  "Sam is our Director of Fields and Umpires and Gerry is our Treasurer and on the Board of our Charitable Foundation.  I would be lost without their assistance.”

League play begins in late March down in the great state of Texas and finishes in August or September with a short Fall Ball season that starts in mid-September and wraps up in early November. All divisions except Rookie League have playoffs, with all teams participating.

"Our divisions include an 18+ Open National (Advanced), 18+ Open American (Intermediate), Veterans (35+), Masters (45+) and Legacy (55+).  We also have a four team Rookie League,” added Pruitt

How did Kirk actually accept the reins from his predecessor Gerry Mecca five years ago? "Gerry just said ‘I'm going to be traveling a lot for work.  Could you handle the day-to-day stuff?’  I said OK.  That was pretty much the conversation.”

"Many of our players participate in the MSBL National Tournaments in Phoenix and Florida.  We also participate in the MSBL Insurance Program for liability and medical insurance for our players.  Without the medical insurance, a few of our players would have had significant financial hardships due to injury.”

As mentioned previously, the NTABL is well represented at the MSBL National Tournaments but ironically Kirk hasn’t been able to participate.  "I personally have not been to any of the National Tournaments but maybe someday I’ll get there.”

A league that has been around nearly 30 years and has grown so incredibly has much wisdom to share.  Kirk Pruitt would be one of those that a new league president would do well to listen to. "Get lots of help and don't be afraid to ask,” said Pruitt.  "Your league membership in MSBL can be a tremendous asset.  Be it website design, field maintenance or what have you, don't be afraid to ask for or receive help."

The North Texas Amateur Baseball League is very involved in charitable events and fund raisers throughout the year as well.  "Give something back to your community!  Our All Star Game is our signature event.  It raises money for the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.  The hospital treats children regardless of the family's ability to pay.  We have patients come throw out the first pitch, include them in team pictures and present them with "autographed” baseballs. Our players love the event and love to be involved.”

The NTABL is a bonafide role model for leagues across the country.  You can check out their website at http://www.dallasmsbl.com/  In addition, if you wish to contribute to any of the North Texas causes, here is their portal https://community.tsrhc.org/NTABL_Donation
