Shafii, Monterey Bay League president
managed by Lance Koehler, did not start off too hot but were able to win enough
games to make it in as the #4 seed. They did not really play up to their
abilities during the regular season and had three loses by one run and nine
loses by four or fewer runs, so all of their games were competitive.
into the playoffs, they ended up facing the essentially undefeated Tricord
Traitors, whom they played very well this season. They knew that we were the
deeper team and playing them in a double header favored the Aztecas. They were
both high scoring games but very well played. In game one the Aztecas got a
complete game from Sean Sanders who had 11 k's in a 16-13 win. Offensive
standouts were Artie Rosas 3-5 3R 1RBI and a walk and Isaiah Zamorez, who hit a
late 2-run home run.
In game two Zach
Boyce also came up big and gave them a complete game while striking out 10 in a
14-13 win. Offensive standouts were Kyle Pullins who was 3-4 R, RBI and a walk
and Brian Meek 3-5 3R 2RBI. The Aztecas were able to sweep the one seed out of
the playoffs after they had not lost a regulation game all year.
The Aztecas were
also able to sweep the Jays in the championship round. The Aztecas came out
hot and won game one via the mercy rule in a seven inning 11-1 contest. SeanSanders gave a solid complete game pitching performance and had 9k in seven
innings. Offensive standouts were Matt Jew 2-3 2R, 2 RBI with a double and Lance Koehler was 2-3 R, 2RBI, a walk and two doubles.
Game two was a
back and forth event and was much closer but the Aztecas pulled out the win
10-8 as the Jays wore down late in game two. Zach Boyce gave the Azteca's a
complete game pitching and had 7k's and only two earned runs but was hinderedby numerous errors in a rather sloppy game defensively. Boyce also came through
at the plate and went 2-2 with R, RBI and two doubles. Matt Jew also had a
great game at the plate and went 2-4 R and an RBI. The Aztecas got hot when it
mattered and finally played up to their abilities and were able to rattle off
four straight wins to sweep into title town!
