Ohio Classics 20, San Antonio Texans 9

‘Midgley Spends Night in Hospital, Returns for MVP Honor’

By Mary Kusmirek and Mike Tango, special to MSBL

October 20, 2017, Riverview Park, Mesa, AZ- (Photos by Jan DiLoreto and Mary Kusmirek) The Classics of Ohio executed an amazing opening move in their match with the Texans of San Antonio by bunting and crushing line drives to bring across 17 runs in the first three innings in the 70-over Central division championship game. The undefeated Texans were coming off a 22-21 ten inning, five hour plus affair in the semi finals and showed the strain from the start. The Classics had a much easier go with the Aussie Aces of Australia, winning 8 to 2.

Doug Price of the Ohio Classics posted his second victory of the tournament, shutting down Texan hitters for several innings before San Antonio plated their next four runs in the fifth inning.

George Hughes, manager and second baseman for the Classics, played well getting onbase four times and making plays in the field while recording several assists and putouts. In a post-game interview, George noted the Classics have now won their third MSBL championship.

Hughes heralded Fred Rolston for his three victories and his strong hitting throughout the series. Fred planted a double into the left field corner driving in two Classics runners in the final game.

Tommy Midgley was named MVP of the series by his teammates. Tommy came off the field in the playoff game on Thursday against the Aces, suffering from a heat stroke. After a night in hospital, Tommy was raring to go to be with his team. Tommy returned to cheer at the game and accept his MVP award.
